In Minnesota, the term “Divorce” is often used interchangeably with “Dissolution of Marriage.” Both terms mean a legal process that severs the marriage relationship between a married couple. When a divorce is finalized, the Court issues a Divorce Decree, which memorializes either the parties agreement(s) relative to the Divorce or states the Court’s decision (if the case was decided after a trial) relative to all of the issues. Depending upon the issues involved in a Divorce, a Divorce Decree contains provisions relative to custody, child support, spousal maintenance, property division, allocation of debt, allocation of tax dependency exemption, etc.
